M. Stine: If there’s one thing we manage to do consistently with our Friday Current Events, it’s submitting them late. Wouldn’t want to throw you off and actually have it ready to be posted by Friday, so here you go!
1.) John Edwards indicted
M.Stine: What an epic fall from grace. Of all the politicians/former politicians/wannabe politicians who annoy me (and there are many), John Edwards is one of the top ones…I’m literally disgusted at the mention of his name. I will admit that I was once a BIG fan of his, and definitely sported a “Noles for Kerry/Edwards” pin back in college, but those extreme liberal days of mine are long gone. I’m not sure if he did violate campaign finance laws, but I don’t so much care. To me the bigger crime (for which we know he is guilty of) is that he cheated on his adoring wife with a fugly (I could say much worse) woman, while still trying to pass himself off as this great family man….what a sleaze.
K.Mo: I also voted for the Kerry/Edwards team! In retrospect, I’m happy they didn’t win, but for selfish reasons. Did I really need four to eight years of people asking me if I voted for Kerry because he spells his last name the same way I spell my first name? No, no I did not. With that said, I did have a Kerry/Edwards poster hanging in my dorm room. And by poster I mean those signs you stick in the grass. I swiped it while walking home from the bar one night during my sophomore year of college and taped it to my wall with duct tape. Classy. I’m with Melissa on the whole “what actually bothers me about John Edward’s” topic. You cheated on your wife. Your wife that had cancer. Enough said. You don’t really get much more disgusting than that.
2.) “Dr. Death”, Jack Kevorkian dies
M.Stine: Even though I think that Jack Kevorkian was a little nuts, I 100% support physician-assisted suicide for the terminally ill. Life is full of horrible diseases that are debilitating and cruel, and the majority of the population cannot imagine the pain and suffering they cause. People who are afflicted by such diseases aren’t going to make a miraculous recovery. They’re not going to be helped by the latest physical therapy or newest drug regimen. They’re going to die…it’s just a matter of when. I don’t agree with the fact that Kevorkian assisted people who were not terminal (several were just “old”), but if nothing else he raised the profile of the “dying with dignity” movement, and I believe that is a good thing.
K.Mo: Was it just me or did Jack “Dr. Death” Kevorkian continually look like he was about to keel over and die at any second? I too support the “dying with dignity” movement. I have no intention of attempting to live while a flesh eating bacteria consumes my skin. No thank you. But I suppose with assisted suicide also comes a slew of legal questions like, “what do we deem terminally ill?” Hopefully someone out there has some legit answers because I certainly don’t.
3.) WeinerGate
M.Stine: I just find this story to be hilarious. What’s this Representative Weiner? You can’t say for certain that the picture in question isn’t you? Ha! I frequently toss around the word “idiot” to describe people who get caught in these types of situations, but really…what else can I say? The world today is all online and filled with potentially damaging pictures, tweets, pokes, statuses and Farmville updates. You have to protect your online identity and any social media accounts you have! But better yet, how about we not take scandalous pictures of ourselves? Problem solved.
K.Mo: If you take inapprop pics or send inapprop texts/tweets then you deserve to have something like this happen to you. I just can’t be sympathetic. Social media is a powerful tool that can be used for good or evil. One would think adults would know better, but not so much. It’s bad enough when an immature 16 year old does it, but it really is a horse of a different color when a grown man or woman finds themselves in this sort of debacle.
4.) Syrian uprising
M.Stine: Another day, another deadly attack in Syria . In the past few months more than 1,000 people have been killed at anti-government protests by President Assad’s regime. Like several other countries in the Middle East (I’m talking about you Iran and Libya!), access for foreign journalists is restricted and the media is state-run, so who knows if that figure is accurate or if it’s higher. A symbol of this uprising has been a cell phone video that shows the corpse of 13 year old Hamza al-Khatib, who had been tortured and mutilated by government forces. Enjoy hanging out with the devil, Assad.
K.Mo: You have to wonder how these people sleep at night. Do you rest easy when you know you are responsible for the deaths of innocent kids? I can’t even sleep peacefully when I find a bug in my bedroom (the bug sighting led to a Friday night dream where colorful moths covered every inch of my bedroom walls and my dad had to get rid of them with a vacuum cleaner)! How sick must you be to torture and mutilate anyone, let alone a child?? And what’s with this whole “decomposing body” explanation? Pretty sure a decomposing body does severe off its own genitals.
5.) Girlfriend shoots boyfriend through heart on dare.
M.Stine: WTF?! Maybe it’s all the BPA we’ve been exposed to or the amount of processed foods people have been eating, but this country is seriously getting progressively dumber. I’m surprised that no charges were brought against the girlfriend, given that they were drinking and it was an intentional shooting. I wonder how long this intelligent duo will stay together.
K.Mo: I think the best case scenario would be this couple staying together so at least two fools would be removed from the dating pool. But on the flip side of that idea, if they stay together they may have a child together and that just seems like a bad news bears situation. I was traumatized enough when I found out my parents went skinny-dipping with my aunt and uncle (my cousin Katie was horrified and yet felt the need to share it with all of the cousins), so I can only imagine how it would feel to learn your mom once shot your dad.
